I’ve always punted around an idea of a tattoo with kanji in it. Not only do I like the way kanji looks, but I also speak enough Japanese to really know what I’d get tattooed on me. The current and long-time front runner is this: 七転び八起き which means “Fall down seven times, stand up eight,” and has been a Thing for me for a while, since before I even left for Japan.
Everyone has seen or heard about someone with a wacky-ass kanji tattoos that are highly misinformed. (“It means ‘love friendship sexy!’ The Japanese have a character that means ALL of that together!”). My previous experience with this was riding a bus in college, when a girl in front of me sat down and the back of her shirt rode up, revealing large kanji inked across the small of her back. Upon the marginal expressed interest of her seatmate, she began to yammer on about how she got the tattoo during a hard point in her life, it means so much, and it’s Japanese for “Power of Myself.” Someday she’s going to find out that the three palm-sized characters of 米の力 mean “Power of Rice.”
Which brings us to more recent events. I was in the comics store stocking up on new essentials (as you do), and the cashier had a kanji tattooed quite boldly on his inner arm, about halfway between wrist and elbow. I recognized the kanji and was so thrilled about this realization that I almost blurted it out… before realizing that if someone was going to tattoo this on themselves and know what it meant, they would have to have either a strange sense of humor or some deep need for permanent irony.
I ask him what it means. It turns out it is an obscure Chinese character without a direct translation to English, though the closest meaning would be “courage.” I thanked him, took my comics, and exited to hustle to a friends house and make damn sure the kanji meant what I thought it did. I was right.
So yeah, if any of you wind up at Dreamhaven Comics down on Lake Street, and see the friendly guy with black hair working the counter, take a good look at his tattoo. I didn’t really have the heart to tell him that this:

… actually means “strawberry.”

lol omg this like the one this dude got at my school it was sopposed to say “mushrooms” which is a weird tattoo to start out with any way lol but it turned out to be far lol
I am about to get “fall down seven times, stand up eight” on my back. I have a different version then the one you have in your post. Now, I am a bit worried I might not get the correct lettering.
the site I pulled the character design from was: stockkanji.com
why is are your characters different then the ones on that site?
any thoughts??
My characters above include the hiragana び (bi) and き (ki) for the endings of nana koroBI ya oKI. However, 七転八起 has the same meaning, so you’re ok! Bless you for checking out stuff and asking questions BEFORE getting inked… and thanks for the link to that site, it’s quite interesting!
Im thinking about getting this saying as a tattoo. I was debating between english or japanese especially now that I see people have gotten this tattooed wrong before. Any thoughts or directions to make sure this doesnt get fed up?
I’m wanting to get a Kanji tattoo also, but I’m very concerened about getting the correct translation. I’m wanting something that will express:
“Love suffers long, love is patient; love is kind and envieth no one. Love is never boastful, nor conceited, never selfish, and not quick to take offense. There is nothing love cannot face, there is no limit to its faith, hope, endurance. Abide faith, hope, love, but the greatest of these is love.”
But that’s alot to say and I need it to fit down he spine of my back, and I don’t want it to be small symbols. Any suggestions?
@kyle – Which phrase were you thinking of getting tattooed? I can vouch for the correctness of the material at the aforementioned StockKanji, though, as with any tattoo, think and then ink! If you have more questions, shoot me an email.
@Erin – If you send me an email, I can send you the full translated text of the verse you quoted above (I Corinthians 13:4-13), and can try to help you peg down something from there? In terms of sayings, I dug up 恋と咳とは隠されぬ (koi to seki to wa kakusarenu), which is literally “Love and a cough cannot be hidden,” or “Love conquers all.”
I’m very intrested, in your help. I would like the Full translated text of the verse. And your help pegging down what I want to say. I donnot know your email, mine is Only1_erin@yahoo.com please email me and let me know its from Silentseas.
Thank you so much!
can someone please send me a kanji sign for friendship?
i need it realy much…
thank you inadvance
You seem very helpful and obviously knowledgeable on the topic of Kanji. I’m another novice, looking and researching the correct way to say “True Life Partner” for my ink. I was able to get a transalation of the three words (partner seems slightly off though) from Kanjisite.com
I would be happy to forward for a quick review if you send me your email address. Thank you for saving us from ourselves :o)
Hi there…I too am looking for the Kanji for “Faith Hope Love,” to go with the Corinthians bible verse. I’ve found a variation of symbols, but was hoping to find a single symbol for each word. Would anyone be able to send me pictures of these symbols? Thanks so much!
Hi, you seem to know a great deal about this subject and I would really appreciate some advice – I really want to get a tattoo but would hate to have the wrong meaning inked on my body for life so have been trying to do some research into it before I go ahead but there is so much out there adn so many websitses offering what they say are accurate translations its so hard to know whether you can actually trust them. I have had a translation done for “Caitlin, my daughter, my heart, my purpose” – would you mind having a quick look and telling me whether you think the translation is accurate? If you wouldn’t mind I can email you the translation? Thank you so much!
Wow!
I take it your an expert.

I’m looking for the Japanese Kanji translation to “We have resolved to endure the unendurable and suffer what is insufferable.” I like the saying and stuff but i dont want to end up getting a tattoo that means something like…”strawberry”
if you know the translation email me at FullmetalHeart1020@hotmail.com

Any suggestions.

This very thing is what has been delaying me from getting a Kanji symbol on my back in the first place. I don’t want to be walking around that can potentially say something like “Foolish Whore”…lol. Can you find an accurate translation for “Loves Conquers All” or “To Thine Own Self Be True” (Be True To Yourself)?
I just wanted to know if you could help me find the true meaning for “love and hate” in kanji symbols. thanks this would really help considering this is going to be imprinted on me for life. thanks in advance.
my email is slick_238@hotmail.com
Hi! I read the comment above of somebody trying to get the bible verse I actually just want to get the word 1 corinthians 13:4-8 or just corinthians 13 can you help me?? “/
Hey, I’m now thinking of a couple of kanji tattoos that I’d like to get. The first would be the Japanese proverb “Koi to seki to wa kakusarenu” and the other would be two separate tattoos on my right rib cage and my lower left side with cherry blossoms. The one on my rib cage would say “Love” and the one of my left side would say “Forever”. I’ve already drawn them out to have a basic idea of what they’d look like, but now I’m very concerned about getting the right kanji. Could you help me?
Man i would be so stoked if my tattoo said power of rice! i think i might go get that tat. honda for life!
Hi,
I’m also researching kanji for a tattoo. I have already purchased the “Inner Strenght” (kiryoku) one from stockkanji.com and while doing some last minute research I couldn’t find a single place that wrote it the way they did.
I would appreciate it if you could confirm it for me.
If it says “Willpower” that’s close enough.
Thanks in advance,
Hi,
We supply independent dictionary references for each of the designs. We have recently added yahoo’s Japanese dictionary. With this you should be very comfortable with the translation. But if you have any questions, please just let us know and we will provide you with all the information you need.
Tim
I always thought that 馬鹿外人。Would be a great tattoo… (^_^)
I am getting a tattoo tomorrow and it is going to be strawberry like you have listed but I wanted the Joyo kanji version and I CAN’T find it anywhere big enough >.< Love how the internet is kinda useless when it comes to trying to find the right version of japanese haha. Any ideas?
Hello.

Hey i want to get a tatto that says “inner strength” and some of the japanese lettering i have seen for it is sort of .. ugly lol. plain. so i tried combining who of them. one sepratly for INNER, that they used to the kiryoku and one that says strength. it wont let me paste them on here, but can you post them if u think u know what im talking about lol? a few diffrent ones maybe?
These comments crack me up. Why would you even consider getting a tattoo in a language you don’t understand? You might as well make up some symbol that means “inner strength” or whatever and get that tattooed on your body, that would have more meaning than some poorly executed kanji. (Check out http://hanzismatter.blogspot.com/ for some really remarkable examples of what can happen.)
There is nothing mystical about Japanese just because you can’t read it. But you probably believe Eskimos actually have 30 words for snow too.
Hey, I’m going to second the earlier request for the Kanji of “love” and “hate”. I’m really excited to get these tats, but if they turned out wrong that would be awkward, you know? Thanks a million!!
bookworm_767@hotmail.com
hey
i have looked all over the web and cannot find a symbol to represent the word “HATE” i have the symbol love over the left side of my chest but i need hate to complete it……its like yin and yang
I most certainly will immediately grab your rss and keep up to date with any updates.
I love this post! I have a kanji tattooed and like everyone else I have a story. I was once a 240 pound overweight stay at home mom to six kids and at 38, I found karate, lost 70 pounds and became a full contact, bare-knuckle knockdown fighter. Kyokushin karate has done a lot for me, so I wanted to cover up a bad tat with the kyokushin kanji and cherry blossoms.
So I go to a Chinese restaurant with my family and the Chinese waitress looks at my Japanese tattoo and says, “Oh I get it, very nice!”
Hey, im going to do a kanji tatoo of “love” and “hate”, but i can´t find the symbol for hate anywere, maby you could help me? Would be very kind! Don´t want to get the tatoo wrong, could be kinda awkward.

There are also so many video uploading websites, and these as well give facility for sharing their video tutorials, but I think YouTube is the finest.
Ok if that means strawberry. How would you write love and hate then?
Hi, I want to get I control my destiny in either Japanese or Chinese calligraphy with cherry blossoms going down my back.
I’ve seen the writing on a few websites, but would anyone be able to send me the symbols to double check it first?
Thanks I’m advance :)
